  11. Kudo Catalog Reader is a Windows 3.x application that will run under Windows 3.1, 3.11, Windows for Workgroups 3.1, 3.11, Windows NT, and Windows 95.  With Windows 95 and NT, Kudo Catalog Reader will not install OLE files into the system directory; Windows 95 and NT has it own advanced OLE file system.
  12. Long file names are not supported by Kudo yet; although you can view and place images from a long file name directory as long as the truncation of the paths and file names are unqiue.

  14. Relative    Relative Addressing allows anyone with a Reader
  15. Addressing:    to access images or media files if the media files are in the         same directory as the catalog or in the same path with a         different drive    letter. For example, if the CDROM drive         letter changed from D: to L:, Kudo Cataloger Reader ( Image         Cataloger ) will locate the media file and display it or play         it!  The same applies to placing images.

  19. INSTALLATION:
  20.  
  21. This documents all the changes that the Kudo installer makes 
  22. when installing Kudo:
  23.  
  24. *    Application files are copied to the target directory, 
  25.     typically c:\kudoread
  26.  
  27. *    The installer searches for the Microsoft OLE 2.0 DLLs 
  28.     on your machine. Three things can happen as a result 
  29.     of this search:
  30.  
  31.     1)     If they are found (as the result of someone 
  32.         having installed another OLE 2.0 compliant 
  33.         application), and they are of the same or 
  34.         a newer version as the copies that Kudo is 
  35.         shipped with, then nothing is done.  
  36.  
  37.     2)     If they are found but are of an older 
  38.         version than the copies Kudo is shipped with, 
  39.         then the Kudo installer will copy its newer 
  40.         versions over the existing ones, wherever it 
  41.         might find them on your machine.
  42.  
  43.     3)     If they are not found, Kudo places new 
  44.         copies of all the OLE 2.0 DLLs into your 
  45.         WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
  46.  
  47. The OLE 2.0 DLLs are functionally an extension to the 
  48. Windows 3.1 operating system, and so are effectively not a part 
  49. of Kudo at all.  
  50.  
  51. This means that, once installed, they are available for all 
  52. applications that support OLE 2.0, and need not be installed 
  53. more than once.  Other OLE 2.0 compliant applications will 
  54. generally observe this convention, and will not duplicate these 
  55. files in their installation if they are already present.  For 
  56. this reason, if you un-install Kudo, it may be risky to remove 
  57. these files unless you are certain there are not other 
  58. applications that rely on them.  
  59.  
  60. The OLE 2.0 DLLs are:
  61.  
  62.     ole2.dll
  63.     ole2conv.dll
  64.     ole2disp.dll
  65.     ole2nls.dll
  66.     ole2prox.dll
  67.     compobj.dll
  68.     storage.dll
  69.  
  70. *    An additional DLL, BWCC.DLL is installed following an 
  71.     identical procedure to the OLE DLLs.  This file fills a 
  72.     support function and is shipped with many applications.
  73.  
  74. *    The Kudo installer determines if it needs to modify 
  75.     AUTOEXEC.BAT.  You will be prompted before it modifies 
  76.     the file.  If you agree to modification, the line:
  77.     
  78.     SHARE.EXE /L:500 /F:5100
  79.  
  80.     will be added to AUTOEXEC.BAT.  If there is already a 
  81.     line present that loads SHARE, then that line will be 
  82.     modified to ensure that the /L and /F options are at 
  83.     least as large as the amount that Kudo requires.
  84.  
  85. *    The Kudo installer then registers Kudo as an application 
  86.     with Windows, and takes care of registering OLE 2.0 on 
  87.     your machine.  Effectively, this modifies the 
  88.     registration database, REG.DAT, in your windows 
  89.     directory, and indirectly, your WIN.INI file.  It 
  90.     is accomplished by running REGEDIT.EXE with the 
  91.     files OLE2.REG and KUDO.REG, which are installed to 
  92.     your target Kudo directory.  This operation can be 
  93.     repeated manually if REG.DAT ever becomes corrupted, 
  94.     see tech note file "REGEDIT.TXT".
  95.  
  96. *    It is recommended to install the program in 256 
  97.     colors. In some computers, running in more than 256 
  98.     colors during installation may not create or display 
  99.     all the Kudo Browser categories.  
  100.  
  101. *    Please register the program by filling out the 
  102.     REGISTER.TXT information found on the CD. To do this, 
  103.     open the above file name using the Notepad application 
  104.     found in Program Manager. Fill in the appropriate 
  105.     information, then print the registration form. 
  106.

  117. KNOWN INSTALLATION PROBLEMS:
  118.  
  119. Two situations have been observed to cause problems with the 
  120. installer:
  121.  
  122. 1)    Installing to a PC that is configured as a diskless 
  123.     workstation can confuse the installer as to the 
  124.     whereabouts of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  In this 
  125.     situation, the installer generally cannot access 
  126.     your boot drive.  When the installer attempts to 
  127.     modify your autoexec file, it will probably come up 
  128.     with a path to an AUTOEXEC.BAT that doesn't exist, 
  129.     such as A:\AUTOEXEC.BAT. If this happens, you will 
  130.     need to make the modifications yourself. Select the 
  131.     option to NOT have the Kudo installer modify your 
  132.     autoexec file, and then, after the installation is 
  133.     complete, manually add the line:
  134.     
  135.     <path>\SHARE.EXE /L:500 /F:5100
  136.  
  137.     to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  <path> is the full path 
  138.     to your DOS directory (or wherever SHARE.EXE exists).  
  139.     The /L & /F options are suggested minimums. If you are 
  140.     already loading SHARE in your autoexec, then you only 
  141.     need to ensure that you add the command line options 
  142.     to the SHARE statement.  If the options are already 
  143.     there, and they are larger, then leave them alone. If 
  144.     they are there but are smaller, then use the values 
  145.     suggested here. You will need to reboot your computer 
  146.     for this change to take effect.
  147.  
  148. 2)    Installing to a network version of Windows can cause 
  149.     problems if the user does not have write privileges 
  150.     to some of the Windows directories. The Kudo installer 
  151.     may need to add some DLL's to your current 
  152.     WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.  This directory will often 
  153.     be on a networked drive that is read-only when you are 
  154.     running a network version of Windows.  You will get 
  155.     messages to the effect of "Can't write to file ... due 
  156.     to read-only protection...", etc. This indicates that 
  157.     you will need to have the network supervisor run the
  158.     installation in supervisor mode to obtain proper 
  159.     write access to the necessary directories.

  163. VIEWING IMAGES IN THE KUDO BROWSER

  166. NOTE: The Kudo Browsers were created for the .BMP format only. The images 
  167. are also in the .WMF format and are identical to those in the .BMP format.
  168. When viewing the Kudo Browser you will find the following categories: Borders.
  169. These categories were placed in the browser for viewing the images. It is recommended, however, to use these categories  
  170. in the .WMF format instead for better resolution and resizing capabilities. To go to
  171. the .WMF images click on the Content folder 
  172. next click on the .WMF subdirectory.

  251.       This license will terminate automatically if you fail to comply 
  252.    with the limitations described above.  On termination, you must 
  253.    destroy all copies of the Software. EXPORT CONTROLS.  None of 
  254.    the Software or underlying information or technology may be 
  255.    downloaded or otherwise exported or reexported 
  256.    (i) into (or to a national or resident of) Cuba, Iraq, Libya, 
  257.    Yugoslavia, North Korea, Iran, Syria or any other country to 
  258.    which the U.S. has embargoed goods; or 
  259.    (ii) to anyone on the U.S. Treasury Department's list of Specially 
  260.    Designated Nationals or the U.S.  Commerce Department's Table of 
  261.    Deny Orders. 
  262.    By downloading  or using the Software, you are agreeing to the 
  263.    foregoing and you are representing and warranting that you are 
  264.    not located in, under the control of, or a national or resident 
  265.    of any such country or on any such list.

  267.     <R>MISCELLANEOUS. 
  268.    <N>This Agreement represents the complete agreement concerning this 
  269.    license between the parties and supersedes all prior agreements 
  270.    and representations between them. It may be amended only by a 
  271.    writing executed by both parties. 
  272.    If any provision of this Agreement is held to be unenforceable 
  273.    for any reason, such provision shall be reformed only to the extent 
  274.    necessary to make it enforceable.  This Agreement shall be governed 
  275.    by and construed under California law as such law applies to 
  276.    agreements between California residents entered into and to be 
  277.    performed within California, except as governed by Federal law. 
  278.    The application the United Nations Convention of Contracts for 
  279.    the International Sale of Goods is expressly excluded.
